Voter Girl Project (https://my.lwv.org/ohio/kent/voter-girl) The VOTER Girl Project is a fun and rewarding activity in which Leagues collaborate with their local Girl Scout councils. The one-day class is available for all scout levels - from Daisies to Ambassadors - with a curriculum appropriate for each level. We collaborate with the Mountains to Midlands Girl Scouts Council to provide teachers and curriculum for this event each year. LWVS hosted the Voter Girl Project at Camp Mary Elizabeth in Spartanburg last year on November 2nd. Diversity, Equality & Inclusion Plan (LWV US - https://www.lwv.org/league-management/diversity-equity-inclusion) We are reviewing, along with other Leagues nationwide, a plan to improve Diversity, Equality and Inclusion in our League, our community and our state. The Leagues have adopted policies and procedures to address internal racism and gender inequalities within our Leagues at every level and within the communities we serve. The League does not discriminate against its members regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, gender identity, age, education, culture, and/or political perspective. Our Annual Meeting - Tuesday, May 19, 7:00 pm - via Zoom Since we can't meet in person, let's join the Zoom age and have our annual meeting via video conference. At our annual meeting at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 19, we will elect officers for 2020-2021, approve the League's budget, and hear about some of the projects the board and committees have been working on in 2019-2020. We will have a presentation by our artist, Nancy Corbin, on The Tribute to the Grimke Sisters. She was originally scheduled for our February meeting. The torrential rain made us cancel that one. Then Covid19 changed everything. Finally on May 19th we will hear from Nancy! We expect a 30 minute meeting and hope you will join us. To join our annual meeting video conference, you may click on the following link on Tuesday evening, May 19 at 7:00 pm. If you prefer to call in, the call in information is below, too. However, you won't be able to see the presentation. Join Zoom Meeting https://wofford.zoom.us/j/97538988807 Dial 1-929-436-2866 Meeting ID: 975 3898 8807 For those of you who aren't familiar with Zoom, you join the video conference by clicking the link. Your computer may want to download a piece of software to run, which is OK, but I believe you can watch from your web browser as well (I have never tried that myself.). Zoom will use your computer's camera and microphone so that you can participate. You will see the faces of others participating in the meeting. The host may mute your microphone just to cut down on background noise. 100 for 100!!! 100 Years of the League of Women Voters - yes, 100 years of doing our part to make democracy work for everyone! We are raising money to create our Tribute to the Grimke Sisters outdoor mural. It is such an exciting project celebrating these abolitionists and suffragists. These were courageous women! Did you know they spent some summers in the Spartanburg area? Learn more on our Centennial Celebration page. We need your help to fund it. What if you gave $100 to commemorate 100 years of the LWV? Too much? What about 100 quarters for 100 years of the LWV? Not enough? How does $10 for each year of the League? Whatever the amount, we would love to have 100% participation from our members. As we are asking in the community to donate money, we need the members of LWVS to set the standard! Be proud of your support for The Tribute and our LWV. As always, your contributions support the Leagues voter education work! Please mail your check made out to: League of Women Voters Education Fund (tax deductible) or LWV Spartanburg County (not tax deductible) To: Alice Claggett, Treasurer 193 Briarcreek Road Spartanburg, SC 29301 OR Go to our Centennial Celebration page and click on the Donate button to pay by credit card via PayPal. Thank you all! VOTE411 Is Up and Working! The LWV Voter's Guide, Vote411.org, will show you the candidates on your ballot - you just enter your street address to see what you will be voting on in the June 9 Primary. Each candidate is asked to enter their general information and to give answers to questions supplied by the local Leagues. In this way, you can compare the candidates as you decide which one to vote for. Several Leagues in South Carolina enter this data. For example, LWV Charleston enters the statewide US Senate races as well as their local races. The US House of Representative races are done by different local Leagues. Each League working on VOTE411 does their county and city races. Our Spartanburg League has been working on VOTE411 since 2018. Please do go to Vote411.org to see the races and candidates you will be voting on in the Primary. Absentee voting has started. You can vote by mail now - call the Spartanburg County Registration and Elections Office at 864-596-2549 or request an application to vote by mail on SCvotes.org. In person absentee voting started on Monday, May 11. If you see a candidate that hasn't responded, reach out to them to ask why they did not want their information included in Vote411. For candidates that have completed their info, please connect with them to thank them for providing the information voters need to make an informed decision! If you get feedback that our Vote411 Team needs to hear, please email lwvspartanburg@gmail.com. State League News Here are some ways our State League has been active in making democracy work in the past few days:
