Latest from the League |
Join us to hear the latest on redistricting in South Carolina, what we've done in the last year, what we have planned from the coming year, and how you can join us to make democracy work!
Just follow this Zoom link! As always, our meetings are free and open to the public. Ruth's Reflections: A Note from the President Ruth Stanton, LWVS President Welcome to a new League Year. Fall has traditionally been when the League ramps up for meetings and activities after a quiet summer. We do have lots planned for the fall (more in this newsletter about that), but this summer was hardly quiet! Since our last general meeting in May, League members...
The Board plans for Zoom Meetings this Fall. It makes us sad to do so, but we know that South Carolina is having a huge Covid surge swamping our health care system at this time and we don’t want League Members to unnecessarily and inadvertently contribute to this. We will monitor the situation for 2022. We will use this Zoom link every time, so save it to you calendar entries. Please join us for our first General Meeting, open to all, on Tuesday, September 21, at 7 pm. We’ll Introduce our Fall Meeting Line Up and our plans for activities for the upcoming year. Our featured speaker will be Charles Mann giving us the latest update on South Carolina Redistricting. We welcome guests and new members, so please invite a friend or friends to Zoom in with us. Let’s see who can bring in the most guests! To read the entire newsletter, just click here! Did you miss the live workshop - or perhaps want to refresh your memory? The video is available on the FB event page. Thanks again to everyone who made this workshop possible. So much good information and inspiration! Also, check out the Candidate page at https://www.scvotes.gov/ for details, dates and forms. It's important for a healthy democracy to have more than one candidate running for a given office. There are many reasons to run for elected office and many barriers as well.
We're collecting stories of candidates and almost candidates! If you have experience running for office or if you seriously considered it but opted out for whatever reason, WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Please share your story with us via this form. A few stories will be shared at the annual meeting, but we want to have a collection of written stories as well so we can correctly identify ways to help citizens who wish to serve in public office. Every 10 years, Congressional and other legislative districts are reapportioned. LWV believes that new lines should be apportioned substantially on population. We oppose partisan and racial gerrymandering that strips rights away from voters. (Gerrymandering is manipulating the boundaries of an electoral constituency so as to favor one party or class.)
Dr. Anne Catlla will explain gerrymandering and redistricting in an understandable way and can speak as part of the League's state team addressing redistricting in South Carolina. As an applied mathematician, Dr. Catlla, a postdoctoral associate at Duke University, applies mathematical methods to a wide range of physical phenomena, learning about a variety of interesting subjects in the process. The League of Women Voters of Spartanburg County has a General Meeting each month, usually on the third Tuesday of the month. With that in mind, we have established our DEI Movie Club to give us a venue to consider our systems and interactions from a variety of perspectives.
Our first movie is 13th, named for the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution. The plan is to watch the movie at your convenience - it's available at the Spartanburg County Public Libraries, on YouTube, and on Netflix (for subscribers). Check out the links below. We'll have a lively discussion beginning at 7 pm on Zoom based on a discussion guide you can download here. "Filmmaker Ava DuVernay talks about her new documentary, 13TH, which explores the history of race and the criminal justice system in the United States. The film's title refers to the 13th Amendment." Excerpt from NPR's All Things Considered on 12/17/2016. Some links to prepare for the Movie Discussion Group...
