Ruth's Reflections: A Note from the President
Ruth Stanton, LWVS President

Welcome to a new League Year. Fall has traditionally been when the League ramps up for meetings and activities after a quiet summer. We do have lots planned for the fall (more in this newsletter about that), but this summer was hardly quiet! Since our last general meeting in May, League members...
  • Ran a litter sweep from the Grimke Mural. Thank you to all participants!
  • Participated in a community Juneteenth Litter Sweep. Not only did we have an opportunity to work with other groups, but we also earned $500 through a grant program associated with that! Thank you to all League Litter Sweepers!
  • Provided voting information at a Housing Authority Fair. Thank you, Mary Ann and Christina!
  • Put on the Ready…Set…Run!!! virtual program to encourage citizens to run for office. This was presented in conjunction with the Spartanburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.
  • Participated in the Voting Vigil on July 17.
  • Sent a contingent to Greenville on August 2 to the SC Senate Redistricting Hearing. Charles Mann and I spoke to the State Senators as 2 of about 30 speakers expressing concerns about redistricting.
  • And our Board has met twice.
Our current Board has myself as President, Darcell Davis-Williams as first Vice President of Programs, Lisa Caldwell-Salters as second Vice President of Membership, Becky Slayton as Secretary & Communications Chair, Susan Turregano as Treasurer, Charles Mann as our Redistricting Expert, Christina Johanningmeier as our Natural Resources Expert, Mary Ann Deku as Voter Services Chair, and at-large members Parker Morse-Andreoli, Sundra Proctor Smith, Pam Stoll, Phillip Stone, and Takeisha Washington.  So, a Board with a lot of knowledgeable, hardworking folks.   Many thanks to all of them.

The Board plans for Zoom Meetings this Fall.  It makes us sad to do so, but we know that South Carolina is having a huge Covid surge swamping our health care system at this time and we don’t want League Members to unnecessarily and inadvertently contribute to this. We will monitor the situation for 2022.  We will use this Zoom link every time, so save it to you calendar entries.

Please join us for our first General Meeting, open to all, on Tuesday, September 21, at 7 pm.  We’ll Introduce our Fall Meeting Line Up and our plans for activities for the upcoming year.  Our featured speaker will be Charles Mann giving us the latest update on South Carolina Redistricting. We welcome guests and new members, so please invite a friend  or friends to Zoom in with us. Let’s see who can bring in the most guests!
