Join The League of Women Voters of Spartanburg County and Media Women of South Carolina for: ‘Consider the Source’ Seminar to Address Fake News vs. Actual News Challenge Media Women of South Carolina and the League of Women Voters of Spartanburg County will present “Consider the Source: Knowing Who to Trust and Why…Learning How to Separate Fake News from Actual News,” a panel discussion on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at the Spartanburg County Public Library in the Barrett Room from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Panelists for this hour-long discussion include those on the front lines of ensuring that citizens have access to reliable information and news. They are Kirk Varner, vice president of news for WSPA-TV and WYCW; Jen Madden, assistant director of the South Carolina Press Association; Mike McCormick, reporter/anchor at WYFF News 4; Bob Dalton, editor at the Spartanburg Herald-Journal; Dr. Trevor Rubenzer, political science professor at the University of South Carolina Upstate; and Katherine Wakefield, web developer who runs WebCodeChicks. This event will address why it’s important to be able to differentiate between “real” news and “fake” news, as well as how this growing distrust of media is impacting our political processes, First Amendment rights and civil society.
